Discover the history and heritage of Halekulani
Want to know more about the history of Waikiki Springs? Or why the rooftops at Halekulani are so distinct? Join Hi’inani Papapa Blakesley, a native of Honolulu, for our weekly Legacy Tours, and be invited into the world of the first Hawaiians, their traditions, and the legacy of Halekulani.
“It’s important that the tour be not just about the hotel. It’s also about the first people, Waikiki and how Halekulani has been part of this area for more than a century,” Hi’inani says.
Guests meet at the Concierge desk, then follow Hi’inani as she takes them around the hotel to learn about aspects of the property that many pass, several notice, but few fully comprehend. Over the course of about an hour, those on the tour learn about Halekulani’s cherished beachfront location on Waikiki, and why Hawaiian royalty chose to soak in these waters.
Hi’inani also tells visitors the story behind the large marble sculptures in front of the hotel, and the designers who created them. The tour visits the Main Building where she explains the background of its distinctive “Dickey roof”. Guests also learn about the origins of the character Charlie Chan, and the role House Without a Key played in his inspiration.
“Some of the people who come on the tour have long links to Honolulu or to Halekulani. One guest had family ties to the creator of Charlie Chan. Another had connections to the Lewers family, who originally owned the property. So you never know who is going to join the tour, and add their own perspective to our history,” Hi’inani says.
The complimentary Legacy Tour runs twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 8:00 a.m. Please contact our Concierge to secure your place in an upcoming tour.
